1930 – 1968: Mount LeConte

Located within the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee

Rising 6,593 feet above the Great Smoky Mountains, Mount LeConte is one of Tennessee’s most recognizable high-country landmarks and the third-highest peak within Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Unlike many of the Smokies’ best-known viewpoints, there is no road to the top. Mount LeConte is reached entirely on foot, with five primary trails climbing toward the summit through hardwood forest, rocky outcroppings and the high-elevation spruce-fir landscape of the upper mountains.

Just below the summit sits LeConte Lodge, a collection of rustic cabins at approximately 6,360 feet. Its history predates the national park itself. A tent camp was established on the mountain in 1925 as part of early efforts to introduce influential visitors to the landscape that conservationists hoped would become a national park. Many of the structures built during this time remain part of the mountain today.

Life at the top has always been defined by its isolation. That remoteness has helped preserve much of the experience captured in these photographs: hikers gathered along rocky overlooks, meals eaten outdoors, clouds settling into the valleys below and early mornings spent watching the sun rise above the Appalachian ridges.

Myrtle Point, on the eastern side of Mount LeConte, has long been one of the mountain’s celebrated sunrise locations. From its exposed overlook, the landscape unfolds in layers, with distant ridgelines appearing and disappearing through the mist that gave the Great Smoky Mountains their name.
