Most people drive past Cookeville without stopping. That’s a mistake — and City Lake Natural Area is exactly why.

Tucked just off I-40 at the midpoint between Nashville and Knoxville, City Lake Park is one of those places that rewards the people who know about it. The short, paved trail follows a creek through a canopy of trees before opening up to a large, dramatic waterfall — the kind that feels genuinely surprising for a park this accessible. It’s an easy stop, but it doesn’t feel like one.

Cookeville City Lake Waterfall

The trail to the waterfall is paved, relatively flat, and short enough for kids and casual walkers. It winds alongside a creek the entire way, which keeps the walk scenic from the first step. The waterfall at the end is the payoff — wide, powerful depending on the season, and framed by the surrounding woods in a way that photographs beautifully. Allow about 20–30 minutes round trip, longer if you linger.

Cookeville City Lake

City Lake itself covers approximately 50 acres — a man-made lake formed by damming the Falling Water River. The water is calm and the setting is quiet, making it well suited for kayaking and canoeing.

Fishing

The lake is stocked and popular with local anglers. You can expect to find bass, bluegill, catfish, and crappie. Fishing from the shore is easy along much of the lake’s edge. A Tennessee fishing license is required.

I-40 Pitstop

If you’re making the drive between Nashville and Knoxville, City Lake sits almost exactly at the halfway point and is less than five minutes off the interstate. It’s the kind of stop that turns a road trip into something more — a real place, not just a rest area. Stretch your legs, walk to the waterfall, and get back on the road feeling like you actually saw something.
